1. What is Ely?

During the university term, Ely University Centre provides accommodation for young men attending third level colleges in Dublin. Our facilities and activities are also open to non-resident university students and graduates who have already embarked on their professional careers. During the summer we host foreign students, many of whom come to Dublin to improve their English language skills.

Ely is home to several members of Opus Dei, including the centre's chaplain, who manage the services provided by the centre. Housekeeping duties are undertaken by a dedicated professional catering staff. It is our experience that these permanent elements combine to provide students with a stable atmosphere where their various talents can flourish and they are encouraged to play an active part in the organisation of the cultural and educational activities run by the centre.

Ely has a distinctly Catholic ethos and, in the true sense of the word catholic, it is open to, and indeed welcomes, people of all creeds and backgrounds.

Ely University Centre comes under the auspices of Brosna Educational Centres Ltd., a not-for-profit entity with "charity" status dedicated to the promotion of Christian ideals among all sectors of Irish society.

2. History

Ely University Centre owes its inspiration to Opus Dei, a personal prelature of the Catholic Church. Members of Opus Dei are lay people dedicated to putting their Christian faith into practice in their everyday activities. The Founder of Opus Dei, Saint Josemaría Escrivá, encouraged members of Opus Dei to establish educational initiatives which would go some way to meeting the needs of the society and communities in which they found themselves.

It was in this spirit that Ely was established as an educational centre by Henry Cavanna and other members of Opus Dei in 1957 and Saint Josemaría himself visited the house in August 1959. For its first thirty years of existance Ely operated out of 9 Hume Street. In 1988, however, 10 Hume Street was acquired with a view to providing more space and additional accommodation.

3. Location

Ely's location is marked on the Google Map below.

Ely University Centre is within is within walking distance of Trinity College Dublin (TCD). The No. 10 bus to the Belfield Campus of UCD is around the corner on Merrion Row. The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) is located at St. Stephen's Green West.

  • Opus Dei colegios: colegios y clubes
  • Opus Dei Madrid: San Josemaría en Madrid, colegios y clubes
  • Opus Dei blogs: blog
  • Opus Dei foro: foro con preguntas y respuestas
